The company secured a “public and open” bid to be the direct provider for two programs of the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), offering free internet and cellular phone services, explained Emiliano Calderón, Coordinator of National Digital Strategy.

According to the official, the agreements have both a minimum and maximum amount. The cost of the first contract, related to the Internet for All program, ranges from 778 million to 1,556 million pesos.

Starlink Wins Two Bids in Mexico: For connecting cellular phone towers

The second contract, for connecting cellular phone towers, has a minimum amount of 887 million pesos and a maximum of 1,775 million pesos, covering 1,000 to 2,000 services.

“It is important to mention that we have been talking to the company since it arrived in Mexico, and a series of modifications to the service have been made so that it could work with the CFE’s connectivity project,” added Calderón.

The Coordinator of the National Digital Strategy highlighted that Starlink offers a better-quality internet service.

“It is the fastest internet service in terms of data transfer because there is no signal delay from the Earth to the satellites,” he commented.

Calderón explained that internet through satellite connection uses devices that are far away from Earth, causing a time delay. However, this does not happen with Starlink, as the company has its satellites distributed in a lower orbit, improving connection times.
