The origin of the meaning of Hecho en Mexico  dates back to 1978, when the Ministry of Commerce and Industrial Development issued this emblem through Official Norm NMX-Z-009-1978.

The logo sought to distinguish objects manufactured in Mexico for industrial, commercial and general public purposes.

It was one of the Mexican government’s strategies to promote the purchase of national products and give greater support to the national economy.

Mexican designer Omar Arroyo Arriaga created the “Hecho en Mexico logo, which represents an eagle’s head with the legend “Made in Mexico”.

In the early years of this logo, the typography of the legend was Helvetica or Futura media.

A refreshing of the brand

In 2004, during the administration of former President Felipe Calderón, the logo had two different versions, the work of Mexican designer Christian Soria: one of them showed the eagle’s head looking to the right (instead of to the left, as in the original).

The drawing of the bird was also modified with a slight cut in its feathers. This design had a black box framing the denomination “MX”. The legend “Hecho en México” (Made in Mexico) was placed below these elements.


The second version had a phrase that read “Fíjate que esté Hecho en México” (Make sure it is Made in Mexico).

With this, the public was encouraged to consume products made in the country as a support to the campaigns of the National Advertising Council.

On February 1, 2017, a kind of campaign was made for the revaluation of the logo and meaning of Made in Mexico.

Based on an agreement in which the Hecho en Mexico  logo is made known and the conditions for the granting of authorization for its use are established; and must be complied with:

-That the good is obtained in its entirety, or produced entirely, in Mexico.

-That the good is produced exclusively from materials that qualify as originating in accordance with the Treaties or Trade Agreements to which Mexico is a party.

-That the good is made with non-originating goods, but that it results from a production process in Mexico.

-That the transaction value of the non-originating materials does not exceed the percentage established for each sector with respect to the transaction value of the merchandise.

The interested party must certify within a period of no more than 12 months that it meets certain criteria of national added value, quality, innovation, design, sustainability and labor inclusion, among others.


The Hecho en Mexico mark may be applied:

It may only be marked, printed or reproduced on the containers or packaging of those products that have been expressly recognized as being of national production or manufacture in terms of this Agreement.

It must be clearly, legibly and indelibly marked on the corresponding products.

The proportions or the composition and distribution of the elements that make up the graphic identity of the Hecho en Mexico Trademark may not be altered or modified.

The use of any of the elements of the identity separately or in isolation is prohibited,
