Official: 2030 FIFA World Cup in Spain, Portugal, and Morocco with opening matches in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay.
In a twist on the host cities, FIFA announced the host cities for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, resolving the debate about the centenary tournament.
In an unprecedented World Cup, FIFA announced on Wednesday, October 4th, that Spain, Morocco, and Portugal will host the 2030 World Cup. However, FIFA made a special addition, with three opening matches set to take place in South America.
In commemoration of the centenary of the first World Cup held in 1930 in Uruguay, the Centenario Stadium in Montevideo will host one of the opening matches, along with two other venues in Argentina and Paraguay, where their respective national teams will kick off the tournament at home.
“The FIFA Council unanimously agreed that the only bid to host the FIFA World Cup 2030 will be the joint bid of Morocco, Portugal, and Spain,” said FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
“There will be a celebration in South America, and three countries (Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay) will each host a match,” he added.
The first of these three matches will, of course, be played at the Centenario Stadium, where it all began, in the legendary stadium of Montevideo, precisely to celebrate the centenary edition of the FIFA World Cup.”
Although Chile had joined the joint bid made by Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay to host the 2030 World Cup, the FIFA Council’s decision excluded this country.
2030 FIFA World Cup: Unprecedented
Alejandro Domínguez, president of CONMEBOL, confirmed in a press conference that the opening matches of the 2030 World Cup will be held in Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay.
“We are going to announce a historic event that has just been approved by the FIFA Council,” he began.
“I want to congratulate the members of the CONMEBOL and FIFA Councils present for the excellent work done and for the hard work that has been going on, which did not start with us. Furthermore, a 100-year World Cup could not and should not be anything less than extraordinary, and the FIFA Council understood that,” Domínguez stated.
For the first time in history, a World Cup will have venues on multiple continents.
The 2030 FIFA World Cup will be played on three continents, with the participation of three federations to make the world’s largest sporting event possible.
However, Domínguez did not provide further details on how or where the rest of the tournament will take place.
