The plan to regularize “chocolate cars” in Mexico continues, and the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador has provided an update.

Regarding this, the program to regularize chocolate cars in Mexico will remain in effect for the current year 2023.

Mexican authorities have informed that the program is currently valid for 14 out of the 32 states of the Mexican territory.

These states are: Baja California, Baja California Sur, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Michoacán, Nayarit, Nuevo León, Sonora, Tamaulipas, Sinaloa, Zacatecas, Puebla, and Jalisco.

Rosa Icela Rodríguez, Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, reported on September 27 that the plan was on the right track, and the goals were being achieved.

So far, the program to regularize chocolate cars in Mexico has achieved:

  • 17 benefiting states
  • 1.8 million cars regularized
  • 164 installed modules
  • Tamaulipas, Chihuahua, and Baja California account for 51.6% of the total
  • Over 4.5 billion pesos in revenue.

Icela Rodríguez stated that, at the presidential instruction and due to user demand, the program to regularize chocolate cars will be extended until December 31 of the current year.

According to the official, this extension provides legal certainty and safeguards the assets of thousands of families while contributing to public safety through their inclusion in the Vehicle Public Registry (REPUVE).

Currently, this program, which involves the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry of Security, as well as the Legal Counsel of the Executive and state governments, operates through 164 modules in 17 states.

“Chocolate cars” refer to vehicles imported from the United States, Canada, or Central American countries, whose makes or models are generally not sold in Mexico.
