Who Was Don Carolino, the Urban Poet of Aguascalientes

One of the most heartwarming stories we can learn about in Mexico is that of Don Carolino, the urban poet of Aguascalientes.

It is known that Don Carolino was originally from Veracruz and had moved to Aguascalientes to be with his partner. He was a widower with limited communication with his children.

Don Carolino dedicated himself to creating poems that he would frame and share with his neighbors as he pedaled through the streets of Aguascalientes on his tricycle. He was a poet and street artist in the state of Aguascalientes.

Recently, Don Carolino Serrano Andrade, the urban poet of Aguascalientes and a resident of Barrio de la Estación, was honored with the printed edition of his poems.

Every morning, he would leave his home to roam the streets on his tricycle, accompanied by his beloved dog, Pinto, with whom he collected recyclable materials daily to support himself.

In 2020, Mayor Tere Jiménez had entrusted Don Carolino with the compilation of his poems, resulting in a publication by the Aguascalientes Municipal Institute for Culture (IMAC) titled “A Poet in Transit.”

This publication would serve as a lasting record of his experiences and invaluable legacy.

On the evening of Friday, September 1, 2023, while he was carrying out his activities on the streets of Aguascalientes, Don Carolino passed away, leaving behind a community that cherished him.

Following his passing, neighbors have called for someone to take care of Pinto, Don Carolino’s loyal dog who remained by his side even after his death.

Don Carolino died from a sudden heart attack, and because of this unexpected event, he couldn’t bid farewell.

Upon the report of his condition, paramedics from the Mexican Red Cross and Dr. Eduardo Álvarez Bravo rushed to assist him, but unfortunately, they could not do anything to save him.

The news took the city’s residents by surprise, as Don Carolino was recognized as one of the most endearing and beloved figures in Aguascalientes.

In light of the death of the poet originally from Veracruz, dozens of Aguascalientes residents gathered to bid him farewell on Francisco I, Madero Avenue, where he passed away.

At the scene, neighbors encountered Pinto, the faithful dog who had accompanied Don Carolino for several years and remained by his side even after his death.

In response to Don Carolino’s passing, the urban poet of Aguascalientes, social media users issued a call for someone to take responsibility for Pinto, who, like his owner, is dearly loved by the people of Aguascalientes.

In a TikTok video announcing the death of the urban poet of Aguascalientes, Don Carolino, many users expressed their hope that a responsible individual would adopt the dog. Several internet users even volunteered to take care of Pinto if there was no one close to look after him.

However, according to reports, one of Don Carolino’s children stated that they would be the ones to take care of Pinto.
