Trump’s New Target: Tim Walz’s Immigration Policies
Tim Walz’s immigration policies are now the target of attack by Donald Trump’s team, with criticism regarding the way they handle the migrant population in the United States.
Vice President Kamala Harris’ new running mate is giving former President Donald Trump reasons to his Democratic rival for being weak on immigration.
This is an issue that raises many concerns for many Americans in this presidential election.
Tim Walz, the U.S. vice presidential candidate, is known for his progressive stance on immigration.
The Trump campaign and Republicans are targeting several laws that Minnesota Governor Tim Walz signed last year to open state services and benefits to undocumented immigrants.
Republicans point to them as examples of the Harris-Walz campaign’s “radical left” policies.
“This is a guy who wants to give driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants,” J. D. Vance, the Republican vice presidential candidate, said of Walz at a campaign stop in Michigan on Wednesday, while emphasizing that Trump will stop the influx of immigrants to the U.S.
Tim Walz’s Immigration Policies
At a press conference Thursday, Trump criticized Tim Walz’s immigration policies, saying the governor doesn’t want borders or any form of security for the United States.
His comments followed a video the Republican Party released on X showing Harris and Walz expressing support for sanctuary states and cities, with Walz saying that if the definition of a sanctuary state is that the federal government enforces immigration law and local law enforcement enforces local laws, he’s fine with that.
The Trump campaign he will use against the immigration policies of Tim Walz, who has implemented a number of progressive policies as governor, are a way to draw even starker contrasts between the candidates and highlight their perceived vulnerability.
When asked for comment, a Harris campaign official said the governor and vice president support the bipartisan border deal that Republicans blocked in the Senate earlier this year.
With the help of a Democratic sweep in the state legislature last year, Walz signed several bills making Minnesota more welcoming to undocumented immigrants.
The Trump campaign has focused on Tim Walz’s immigration policies, which last year allowed people in Minnesota to obtain driver’s licenses regardless of their immigration status, joining other states with similar laws.
According to a March 2023 press release from the governor’s office, which noted that there are an estimated 81,000 undocumented immigrants in the state, the measure will increase safety by ensuring that all drivers are licensed and insured.
