The Mirage Las Vegas casino: “Goodbye”

The history of the Mirage Las Vegas casino comes to an end this July 17 when it officially closes its doors; it is one of the most emblematic buildings in the old city.

Finally, the Mirage hotel and casino in Las Vegas closes this Wednesday after 34 years of activity.

The resort will hold a farewell event and officially close its doors on the afternoon of July 17.

It will be the Mirage Las Vegas casino’s finale to a week in which gamblers had a chance to win part of a $1.6 million cash prize, in accordance with Nevada state law.

The Mirage Las Vegas hotel and casino had already announced the decision in May 2024.

After the closure, the 3,000-room resort will undergo a three-year renovation that will erase any trace of the Mirage and its tropical theme.

It will reopen in 2027 as Hard Rock Las Vegas, with a soaring 213-meter-high guitar-shaped tower similar to the Florida hotel.

The volcano will be destroyed to build new rooms.

The Mirage Las Vegas hotel and casino was opened in 1989 by casino magnate Steve Wynn.

The Mirage Las Vegas casino: Beginning of a Cycle

The Mirage Las Vegas casino ushered in an era of luxury resorts on the Strip and was the first to have a curbside attraction: the volcano.

This led the Bellagio and the Venetian to mimic the Mirage with its dancing fountains and canals.

Architects explained to CNN affiliate KSNV-TV that the tropical design created by Wynn was intended to resemble an oasis on the chaotic Las Vegas Strip.

Beyond its exploding volcano, visitors are likely to know the Mirage best for hosting other quintessential Las Vegas shows, such as Siegfried and Roy’s White Tigers and a Cirque du Soleil show set to music by The Beatles.

MGM Resorts bought the Mirage from Wynn in 2000 and sold it in 2022 for more than $1 billion to Hard Rock International.

This is the second time Hard Rock will be present in Las Vegas, as the brand previously owned the now Virgin Hotel off the Strip.
