Samsung electric stoves to be tested

Some 1.1 million Samsung electric stoves are to be overhauled due to reports of possibly causing fires in U.S. homes.

Samsung’s electric stoves are being recalled because, apparently, the knobs on some of its stoves have problems.

In this regard, they warn that fires can occur if pets, or even humans, bump into them.

Several videos show pets accidentally starting fires by jumping on the stoves and pawing at the knobs.

In June, a Colorado dog caused a house fire by doing just that, setting fire to boxes on top of the stove. It was all caught on home security cameras.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), there are about 1.1 million units affected.

Samsung has proposed a solution as Samsung electric cooktops will be subject to recall.

Samsung will provide free knob locks or covers for certain slide-in electric cooktops with front-mounted knobs that were sold between 2013 and 2024.

“This announcement follows reports that knobs on the front-mounted line of stoves can be activated through accidental contact by people or pets, posing a fire hazard if flammable objects are left on the stove top,” Samsung said in a press release.

The CPSC is investigating fires caused by stoves set by pets jumping on them or people accidentally bumping into them.

At a commission meeting in June, the CPSC noted that it “is aware of incidents in which homes have burned down and people have died as a result of fires caused by accidental ignition of stove knobs, either by people bumping into the knobs or by pets activating the stove. The problems affect both gas and electric stoves.”

Samsung electric stoves will be subjected after receiving more than 300 reports of accidental activation by pets or humans since 2013, resulting in around 250 fires.

At least 18 of those fires caused “major property damage.”

There have also been 40 reports of injuries, eight of which required medical attention, and seven of those fires have resulted in pet deaths.

Samsung advises its customers to keep children and pets away from the knobs and to check that they are turned off when finished cooking.

It also advises not to place, leave or store anything on top of the stove when it is not in use.
