Russia threatened European capitals: In the crosshairs

The Russian government threatened European capitals with a quite literal message as they would be under the sights of its missiles.

In a clear threat of war, Russia threatened European capitals, as they believe the United States is doing the same to them.

The Kremlin warned Saturday, July 13, that the decision announced this week to deploy long-range U.S. missiles in Germany could turn European capitals into Russian military targets, repeating a Cold War-style confrontation.

“Europe is in the crosshairs of our missiles. Our country is in the crosshairs of U.S. missiles deployed in Europe. We have already been through this (…). We have enough potential to contain these missiles, but the potential victims are the capitals of these states,” said Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

During the NATO summit, Washington and Berlin announced on Wednesday, July 10, that they will begin the timely deployment of U.S. long-range missiles in Germany in 2026.

In the communique, the U.S. and Germany mentioned that this plan includes the deployment of SM-6 missiles, Tomahawk missiles and hypersonic weapons under development, which will increase the range of projectiles currently deployed in Europe.

The Kremlin on Thursday condemned the decision, which it criticized as a return to the “Cold War,” and Russian Defense Secretary Andrei Belousov and Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin spoke by phone to address the issue of reducing the risk of “possible escalation,” Moscow said Friday.

In that regard, Russia threatened European capitals, a clear warning that they too would be prepared for a response.

The Pentagon stressed “the importance of maintaining lines of communication” with Russia, amid the conflict in Ukraine, supported by Western powers since Moscow launched a military operation in February 2022.

“It will be so,” he replied to Russian journalist of Rossiya 1 channel, Pavel Zarubin, closely linked to the Russian Presidency, who asked if Moscow will respond to this initiative by targeting its missiles at Europe.

Although they did not point out, which ones, Russia threatened European capitals, left as European targets a response.

“The U.S. stationed such missiles, of various kinds, of various ranges, but traditionally aimed at our country. We, in turn, chose European targets for ours,” he explained.

He further noted that “Europe is now coming apart at the seams. Europe is not going through its best times now.”
