Pavel Durov has been brought to justice in France and his future is defined
Telegram founder Pavel Durov was released from police custody in France on Wednesday and transferred to court for questioning ahead of a possible indictment.
The Paris prosecutor’s office said he would now face “initial questioning and a possible indictment” in a court in the French capital.
Undoubtedly, now that Pavel Durov is at the disposal of justice, a long process is coming that will be closely followed.
Durov, 39, was arrested at Paris Bourget Airport on Saturday on a warrant related to lack of moderation on Telegram.
He was being investigated on charges related to a range of offenses, including allegations that his platform was complicit in aiding fraudsters, drug traffickers and people spreading child pornography.
Durov was taken into custody for up to 96 hours, the maximum time a person can be detained under French law before being charged.
French President Emmanuel Macron said Monday that the decision to charge Durov was “not at all political,” a rare intervention by a French leader in a judicial matter.
Telegram was launched in 2013 by Durov and his brother, Nikolai. The app now has more than 950 million users, according to a post by Durov last month, making it one of the most widely used messaging platforms in the world.
Conversations on the app are encrypted, meaning law enforcement agencies, and Telegram itself, have little oversight over what users post.
