Gang clash in Guerrero: The family Michoacana versus Los Tlacos

Gang clash in Guerrero, Mexico, left some 12 people dead in a war that seems to have no end in this region.

Guerrero authorities and Mexican Army personnel went to the municipality of San Miguel Totolapan to verify whether there was a confrontation between criminal groups.

 In a news release, the prosecutor’s office reported on the gang confrontation in Guerrero, with elements of the investigative police, Guerrero police and the Army were sent to the highlands.

But it warned that the location is difficult to access, so updating information could take time.

 According to initial reports, at least 17 people were killed in a clash between criminal groups in the highlands of San Miguel Totolapan.

The Gang clash in Guerrero occurred on February 19 between alleged members of La Familia Michoacana and the criminal group Los Tlacos, who are disputing control of the area.

Preliminarily, the gang confrontation in Guerrero reportedly left 16 La Familia Michoacana and one Los Tlacos gang member dead.

According to videos circulating on social networks, the bodies of the victims were burned.

The aggression occurred after Jose Filiberto Velazquez, director of the Minerva Bello Human Rights Center, announced a non-aggression truce between organized crime groups.

It should be recalled that on January 6 of this year, another confrontation between La Familia Michoacana and Los Tlacos in the municipality of General Heliodoro Castillo left five people dead, according to the state prosecutor’s office.

On that occasion, state and federal authorities located a burned vehicle with charred skeletal remains. According to one of the survivors, drones were used during the attack.

However, the remains could not be recovered because the inhabitants of Tetela del Volcán removed them.

Prosecutors offered the local population to file a complaint and allow genetic testing to determine the identity of the victims, but the population refused.

Just over a month after Familia Michoacana hitmen attacked alleged members of Los Talcos in the community of Buenavista de los Hurtados, municipality of Heliodoro del Castillo, the latter criminal group took revenge.

The Minerva Bello Center for the Rights of Victims of Violence detailed that the Gang clash in Guerrero has left 30 people from the community affected by a group of armed individuals.

This violent incident, which occurred on the night of January 4, follows an onslaught by Los Talcos against the Familia Michoacana, marking an escalation in hostilities between the two criminal groups.

The Minerva Bello Center has reported on multiple occasions aggressions by criminals. Given the escalation of violence, the community has urged the authorities to intervene effectively.

Due to these facts, the State Attorney General’s Office informed that the Ministerial Investigative Police together with the State Police and the Mexican Army are moving to the place of the facts “to investigate and corroborate the veracity of the videos circulating on social networks”.

“Personnel from the Northern Regional Prosecutor’s Office informs that the area is difficult to access, so once they arrive at the site they will provide more information about the incident,” reads a statement.
