The campaign in Mexico will be led by two women, something unprecedented in Mexican history.

Following the announcement of Claudia Sheinbaum as the candidate for Morena, the campaign in Mexico will be led by two women, marking a historic milestone.

According to current poll projections, Mexico could be governed by a woman for the first time since its independence in 1821.

The 2024 presidential elections in Mexico will be contested for the first time by two women: Claudia Sheinbaum, the former Chief of Government of the capital city, and the opposition candidate Xóchitl Gálvez.

Campaign in Mexico will be led by two women

Campaign in Mexico will be led by two women, which is unusual in a country often criticized for its machismo.

Sheinbaum Pardo, a 61-year-old scientist, was declared the winner of the open population poll organized by the ruling National Regeneration Movement (Morena) to choose their candidate.

Therefore, Sheinbaum will face Senator Gálvez, who is 60 years old and was officially nominated last Sunday after dominating the internal elections of the Broad Front for Mexico.

The announcement of the results of the internal election is a test for Morena, the favorite for the 2024 elections, which holds the majority in the Parliament and governs in 23 of Mexico’s 32 states.

The clash between Sheinbaum and Gálvez promises to be a collision of backgrounds, personalities, and styles.

Sheinbaum is the granddaughter of Jewish grandparents from Bulgaria and Lithuania, and she is reserved and cautious.

She has said, “I am a child of ’68,” claiming the heritage of social struggles and never having belonged to the PRI, the old hegemonic party during the 20th century for 70 years.

On the other hand, the opposition candidate Xóchitl Gálvez is often seen wearing traditional indigenous clothing and hails from a town in the central state of Hidalgo.

Xóchitl (which means “flower” in the Nahuatl language) was born into a poor family, with an indigenous Otomi father and a mestizo mother.

Gálvez has challenged Sheinbaum to campaign on her own, without the help of the president.

Politically, Gálvez identifies as liberal and progressive, synthesizing the ideologies of the three parties that support her: the economic liberalism of the right-wing PAN, the ideal of social justice of the left-wing PRD, and the institutional heritage of the PRI.

According to Morena’s announcement, Sheinbaum had a significant lead over the other aspirants.

Morena revealed that Claudia Sheinbaum was chosen to lead the Defense of the Fourth Transformation and, consequently, the presidential candidacy in 2024, with 39.4% of the votes collected through the party’s National Survey Council.

Marcelo Ebrard came in second place with 25.6%, Gerardo Fernández Noroña secured the third position with 12.2%, Adán Augusto López Hernández, in fourth place, achieved 10%, Ricardo Monreal reached 6.5%, while Manuel Velasco only garnered 6.3% of the preference.

The campaign in Mexico will be led by two women, making it an interesting year in light of the political changes in Mexico.
