Another candidate murdered in Maravatío has generated concern in this area, and there are now two mayoral candidates who have been victims of violence in México.
Just hours after the murder of Miguel Angel Reyes Zavala, Morena’s pre-candidate for mayor of Maravatio, his opponent from the National Action Party (PAN), Armando Perez Luna, was also shot and killed on Monday, February 26.
Elements of the Secretariat of Public Security (SSP) arrived at the scene, who cordoned off the area until the arrival of the Michoacán State Attorney General’s Office, who removed the body, collected evidence and opened an investigation into the murder.
The murdered candidate in Maravatío is Armando Pérez Luna, who was a transportation leader and father of the councilwoman of Maravatío, Andrea Pérez Solís.
That same position had already been held by him between 2015 and 2018. Then, in the elections six years ago he sought the candidacy for the municipal presidency, but lost.
Hours earlier, the first candidate murdered in Maravatío, Miguel Ángel Zavala Reyes, a mayoral candidate in Maravatío, Michoacán, was found in his car in the Rancho la Huerta subdivision.

Another candidate murdered in Maravatío-México
The events took place in the vicinity of the San Angel clinic, where Zavala Reyes.
The second candidate murdered in Maravatío, Miguel Ángel Zavala Reyes, a doctor by profession, was just a few days away from formalizing his candidacy for the municipal elections, specifically scheduled for February 29.
This unfortunate incident occurred three days before the event, thus truncating his political aspirations.
Despite the efforts of other physicians present at the scene, the gynecologist’s life could not be saved.
The authorities, after being alerted of the attack, went to the scene to secure the area and began investigations, although so far no arrests have been reported in connection with the attack.
Witnesses at the scene indicated that the assailants arrived in a vehicle, from which they got out to reach the second candidate killed in Maravatío.
Initial investigations revealed the presence of bullet casings from a short weapon at the site of the incident.
Regarding the candidate killed in Maravatío, photographs of the scene showed Zavala Reyes’ white vehicle as the center of the attack.
Investigations in the case
The Municipal Police launched an operation with the objective of locating those responsible, although without success so far.
It is important to mention that last November 4, authorities reported the discovery of the body of Dagoberto Garcia Rivera, leader of the Morena party in Maravatio.
García Rivera’s disappearance had been previously reported to the state Attorney General’s Office on October 19, 2023.
Maravatío de Ocampo known simply as Maravatío, is a city in the Mexican state of Michoacán de Ocampo, head of the municipality of Maravatío.
It is located at approximately 19°53′38″N 100°25′48″W, at an altitude of 2018 m asl.
Perez Luna, was a councilman in the administration of the PRD member, Jose Luis Abad Bautista (2015-2018) and promoted for this mayoral race, by the current councilman and municipal leader of the PAN, Cristhian Plancarte Avellaneda.
