Mexico Migration Summit: Confirmed Presidents

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced the list of presidents and prime ministers who have already confirmed their attendance at the Mexico Migration Summit, organized for Sunday, October 22 in Palenque, Chiapas.

According to the information, the heads of state who will attend the Mexico Migration Summit are:

  • Miguel Díaz Canel of Cuba
  • Gustavo Petro of Colombia
  • Xiomara Castro of Honduras
  • Nicolás Maduro of Venezuela
  • Guillermo Lasso of Ecuador
  • Alejandro Giammattei of Guatemala
  • Ariel Henry, Prime Minister of Haiti

It is worth noting that the Mexican government has not mentioned Nicaragua on the list of invited countries to the Mexico Migration Summit, from which thousands of people have also fled due to growing repression and human rights violations.

The Mexico Migration Summit will take place in Palenque, in the southern state of Chiapas, and according to López Obrador, its goal is to reduce the flow of migration to the United States.

It occurs two weeks after a high-level meeting between U.S. and Mexican authorities and at a time when both countries are intensifying deportations.

Meanwhile, Washington resumed direct returns to Cuba in April and announced the resumption of deportation flights to Venezuela this month.

Mexican Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena said in the Senate the day before that repatriations to Cuba and Honduras had already been intensified, and they would also be carried out to Venezuela.

“That was also one of the reasons why I was in Venezuela on Monday,” she said.

Mexico Migration Summit: Caused

According to their data, more than 60,000 Venezuelans entered Mexico in September, making it “impossible for us to manage effectively.”

In 2023, over 400,000 migrants have crossed the Darien Gap, between Colombia and Panama, heading north, a staggering figure compared to the 250,000 in 2022, which was already a record.

The majority of them were Venezuelans. “It’s a problem that can worsen,” said the Mexican president on Wednesday.

“In all cases, there is an interest in helping migrants, but many countries are going through difficult situations.”

López Obrador will seek a common regional proposal on migration at the Mexico Migration Summit, which will be presented to U.S. President Joe Biden in November.

He thanked Biden for implementing legal alternatives for migration to the United States. The Mexican leader’s approach at the Mexico Migration Summit will focus on “providing support in the communities of origin for those who make the decision to leave out of necessity.”
