AMLO: Mexican Judicial System is Rotten

According to the President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the judicial system in Mexico is rotten.

This assertion was made after he expressed his position on the refusal of the Appellate Court in Criminal Matters to issue an arrest warrant against Genaro García Luna.

Genaro García Luna, who was a close associate of Felipe Calderón, is accused of illicit enrichment due to his clear connections with drug cartels.

“The Judicial Power in Mexico is rotten, taken hostage, serving economic and political interests, and this is just one more proof,” AMLO complained during his morning press conference.

The Mexican president also criticized the definitive suspension granted to Tomás Zerón, preventing the former official from being accused of torture and being the creator of the historical truth in the Ayotzinapa case.

For AMLO, the judicial power in Mexico is rotten, and he has repeatedly made serious accusations about questionable court decisions.

It is worth noting that the Mexican Prosecutor’s Office suffered a legal setback in the case against Genaro García Luna, the former Secretary of Public Security, who was declared guilty of drug trafficking and organized crime in the United States this year.

In this regard, a collegiate tribunal refused to grant an arrest warrant against the former official in a case of illicit enrichment. The Attorney General’s Office (FGR) accuses him of amassing an unjustifiable fortune of 43 million pesos between 2000 and 2012, during the presidencies of Vicente Fox and Felipe Calderón, both from the PAN party.

During these administrations, García Luna first served as the head of the Federal Investigation Agency (AFI), a department now defunct within the Prosecutor’s Office.

Later, under Felipe Calderón, he became the head of the Ministry of Public Security, responsible for the strategy to combat organized crime.

The FGR announced on October 3 that it would take legal action against three magistrates and one judge for acting against the administration of justice, a federal crime under the Penal Code.

All of this situation arises amidst criticism of the Mexican Judicial System, which has been accused of biased decisions. Despite the DEA presenting a report on the matter, Mexican justice did not agree to Genaro García Luna’s detention.

The FGR also announced charges against District Judge Gerardo Genaro Alarcón López, who initially denied the arrest warrant against García Luna.

“Even though, with the evidence provided to the judicial authority, it is demonstrated that his wealth is disproportionate and unjustified in relation to his lawful income,” the Prosecutor’s Office detailed.

These decisions and others have led the President of Mexico to believe that the Mexican Judicial System is rotten.
