“We congratulate Edmundo González Urrutia for the success of his campaign. Now is the time for Venezuelan parties to begin talks on a respectful and peaceful transition in accordance with Venezuelan electoral law and the wishes of the Venezuelan people.

In the communiqué where the United States recognizes the triumph of Edmundo Gonzalez, the support is tacit.

The U.S. Secretary of State also emphasized that “at least 12 million Venezuelans peacefully went to the polls and exercised one of the most powerful rights granted to people in any democracy: the right to vote. Unfortunately, the processing of those votes and the announcement of the results by the Maduro-controlled National Electoral Council (CNE) were deeply flawed, resulting in an announced result that does not represent the will of the Venezuelan people.”

This is not the first time that Venezuela is in a similar situation, as it already happened with who was president of the National Assembly, Juan Guaidó, in what was an interim government.
