Akira Toriyama, who passed away on March 1st at the age of 68, was the creator of “Dragon Ball”, the popular manga that has been a trend many times, and is part of pop culture.
Akira Toriyama’s life began on April 5, 1955 in the city of Kiyosu, Aichi Prefecture, and he started drawing manga at the age of 23.
He made his debut as a cartoonist in 1978, when he submitted a short story to the manga fan magazine “Weekly Shonen Jump”. A year later he won the Shueisha Tezuka Award with a two-chapter manga series.
In Akira Toriyama’s life, the best known work is “Dragon Ball”, undoubtedly his most popular producer.
But in Akira Toriyama’s life, his more than four-decade career has reaped a long list of works that have given him a central place in the manga and anime industry, among them “Dr. Slump“.

“Dragon Ball” initially appeared in 1984, in the same magazine where he had published manga at the beginning of his career.
It is perhaps Toriyama’s most popular work, with more than 260 million copies sold worldwide, according to Japanese news agency NHK.
It tells the story of Son Goku, a boy from outer space with superhuman strength and a monkey’s tail who embarks on a quest to find the seven dragon balls.
As Son Goku embarks on his quest for the seven dragon spheres, he fights villains and protects the Earth. As he ages, the story focuses on his descendants and friends.
The franchise is based on the classic Chinese novel “Journey to the West” and was adapted to television and film.
The original manga-based series, “Dragon Ball,” aired from 1984 to 1995, then followed with the sequel GT and Super.
Films created from the series include “Dragonball Evolution” (2009), “Dragon Ball Super: Broly” (2018) and “Dragon Ball Z: Battle of the Gods” (2013).
Toriyama announced in October 2023 that he was working on a new season of “Dragon Ball” called “Dragon Ball DAIMA” in which, due to a conspiracy, Goku and his friends become small and to set things right they leave for a new world in a story full of adventure with the traditional characters, according to an announcement on his Instagram account.
In the statement on his death, Bird Studio / Capsule Corporation said that the artist still had “several works in full creation with great enthusiasm” and that “he would still have many more things to achieve”.
In 1981 Toriyama won the Shogakukan manga award for “Dr. Slump,” which has sold more than 35 million copies in Japan, according to information from the Comic-Con San Diego page.
Toriyama also excelled in video game design. In this area, his best known role is that of co-creator of “Dragon Quest”.
He also participated in the ultra-popular and acclaimed “Chrono Trigger”.
