Tesla’s project in Monterrey is still on track

Tesla’s project in Monterrey is still on track, despite the rumors on Thursday, October 5th; it all seems to be a misunderstanding.

Jonathan Ruíz Torre, a journalist specializing in the field, explained that everything points to some key points to understand what is behind the rumor that Tesla would abandon its project in Monterrey, Nuevo León.

The rumor started on social media, whether you saw it on WhatsApp chains or on X, formerly known as Twitter, which, by the way, is also owned by Elon Musk.

It all revolves around the paragraph located on page 569 of Elon Musk’s new autobiographical book written by Walter Isaacson, which quotes the CEO of SpaceX as follows, according to the translation by Editorial Debate:

“Tesla engineers have to be on the assembly line for everything to work well, and not everyone is going to move to Mexico.”

Another paragraph by Isaacson mentions that in May of this year, Elon Musk decided to change the initial location for the production of Robotaxis to his plant in Austin, Texas, “where his workplace and that of his engineers would be next to the highly automated high-speed assembly line.”

Ruíz Torre explains that the Robotaxi would be similar to a new “small and affordable” model that Tesla intends to sell for around $25,000, which could be manufactured at the plant in Mexico.

The similarity in the platforms of the Robotaxis and the affordable cars, which will possibly be called Model 2, led some people to assume that the Robotaxis would also be produced in Monterrey.

Furthermore, the move to Austin was seen as a sign that the plants in Nuevo León were finished for Tesla.

Tesla’s project in Monterrey is still on track

The rumors escalated not only in Mexico but also reached Rohan Patel, Vice President of Public Policy and Business Development at Tesla, who said on Thursday that the publications inaccurately and randomly represented their plans in Monterrey.

All of this confirms that Tesla’s project in Monterrey is still on track as planned.

“We will continue to work with local, state, and federal governments and greatly appreciate their efforts to enable the permits and sustainable infrastructure required,” explained the executive.

Samuel García echoed Patel’s message and called for calm, stating that the Government of Nuevo León will have everything ready for Tesla to establish itself.

“Don’t worry, Tesla is coming. Everything is going very well and according to plan. The Nuevo León government is working tirelessly alongside Tesla to fulfill the infrastructure commitments required for the Gigafactory. We will have Tesla in Nuevo León and in Mexico,” he wrote on his X account.

Tesla’s project in Monterrey is one of the most significant investment proposals due to its impact on the rest of the market.

On the other hand, it is also a call to invest in Mexico. Both supporters and opponents have celebrated the arrival of Tesla in Nuevo León for months, from those who claim it as an achievement of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to those who say it can only happen in a state not governed by Morena.

However, Jonathan Ruíz Torre suggests that the rumors are aimed at Samuel García, the governor from the Citizens’ Movement party, and he points out that these may be “weak blows” in his quest for a possible presidential candidacy in 2024 on behalf of the orange party.
