In the unfolding drama of Mexico’s upcoming presidential election, Former Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum indisputably commands a significant lead in the presidential race. She has not just taken the lead but has soared ahead in the race to become the ruling party candidate for the 2024 presidential election, as shown by a recent opinion poll.

The poll, conducted from August 18 to 23 and encompassing the opinions of 1,000 adults, indicates a significant surge in support for Sheinbaum. Her popularity has soared from 31% in a previous poll conducted in May to a commanding 37% in the latest survey. This remarkable increase solidifies her position as the foremost contender within the ruling leftist National Regeneration Movement (MORENA).

The Shifting Landscape of Political Rivalries

In contrast, her closest rival in the MORENA contest, former Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard, has seen his support wane. Ebrard’s backing has slipped from 26% to 22% over the same period, as revealed by the poll. It’s important to note that the margin of error for the poll stands at plus or minus 4 percentage points.

The Competitive Landscape Beyond MORENA

While MORENA maintains its dominant position in the presidential race, opposition alliances are also gaining momentum. Senator Xochitl Galvez emerges as a formidable contender, demonstrating a strong performance against MORENA’s leading contenders. Senator Beatriz Paredes closely follows in the rankings.

The opposition alliance, comprising the center-right National Action Party (PAN), the centrist Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), and the center-left Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD), is preparing to announce its presidential candidate. Galvez, known for her unorthodox political approach, represents the PAN in the Senate. On the other hand, Paredes, a seasoned operator and former chair of the PRI, brings her extensive experience to the race.

Opinion polls underscore MORENA’s current dominance, bolstered by President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador’s robust approval ratings. Nevertheless, the opposition faces complexity due to the involvement of a fourth party, the center-left Citizen’s Movement (MC), which has yet to decide whether it will join forces with the others or run independently.

In a three-way electoral scenario, Sheinbaum is positioned as the frontrunner, projected to secure 44% of the vote, followed by Galvez at 27% and Samuel Garcia, MC governor of Nuevo Leon state, at 12%, as indicated by the Reforma poll. Should Paredes be the candidate, she garners 25%, with Sheinbaum leading at 46%, and Garcia at 11%. Ebrard also maintains a comfortable lead against both women, albeit by slightly smaller margins. “Sheinbaum Leads in Polls as the Campaign for Morena’s Presidential Candidacy Nears its End”

The former head of government of the capital city has maintained a strong lead over Marcelo Ebrard in the race to replace López Obrador in next year’s elections.

The margin of advantage with which Claudia Sheinbaum began in the preferences to define the candidacy for the presidency of the Republic of Morena and its coalition remains solid just hours before the official survey begins, the method that will determine who will occupy the position in practice.

This is the consensus according to the data provided by the country’s main polling firms: all known measurements, except for one, place her in the first position. In other words, the campaign activities during the formal proselytizing period defined by the party do not seem to have had a significant impact on modifying the assessments and preferences that citizens had already formed before the campaign period.

In an initial exercise conducted by El País Mexico to gather citizens’ preferences before the start of the campaigns, between 29% and 41% of the population preferred the former head of government to lead the ruling party. In the second place, Marcelo ranged between 18% and 29%, while the rest of the participants distributed themselves with smaller percentages that did not threaten the position of the top two candidates.
