Joe Biden approves the expansion of the border wall of the United States
The expansion of the border wall in United States border is set to become a reality, as the government of Joe Biden has authorized the enlargement of the border barrier.
In this regard, the Biden administration will waive 26 laws to build additional border barriers in the Rio Grande Valley.
The expansion of the border wall was confirmed following a notice published in the federal register this Wednesday, citing “high levels of illegal entry.”
Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas stated in a publication in the U.S. Federal Register that the Department of Homeland Security had reached a conclusion to make this decision.
“It is necessary to waive certain laws, regulations, and other legal requirements in order to ensure the rapid construction of barriers and roads” in Starr County, Texas, along the U.S.-Mexico border.
The expansion of the border wall comes amid the challenges the United States government faces in curbing mass migration.
Mayorkas referred to the Rio Grande Valley as an area of “high illegal entry.”
Approves the expansion of the border wall of the United States
The Border Patrol reported nearly 300,000 encounters in the Rio Grande Valley sector between October and August, according to federal data.
While Mexico takes strong measures against migrants, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador gains influence with Washington.
The expansion of the southern border wall in the United States, according to the notice, will be funded through a 2019 appropriations bill that specifically allocated money to a “border barrier” in the Rio Grande Valley.
According to Mayorkas, “DHS is required to use those funds for their intended purpose.”
The official stated that there is currently an acute and immediate need to build physical barriers and roads near the U.S. border to prevent illegal entries.
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) had previously announced plans to design and build up to 32 kilometers of new border barrier systems in Starr County.
The project includes light poles and lighting, gates, cameras, access roads, and other systems.
CBP sought public input between August and September, according to the agency.
Among the laws that the Biden administration is bypassing to build the wall are several of the same laws that the government has sought to protect in the past: the National Environmental Policy Act, the Endangered Species Act, the Federal Water Pollution Control Act (Clean Water Act), and the Clean Air Act.
On Thursday, October 5th, Mayorkas, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Attorney General Merrick Garland, and White House National Security Advisor Dr. Liz Sherwood-Randall will meet with their Mexican counterparts in Mexico City for their annual security discussions.
The expansion of the border wall is a contradiction, considering that Biden promised not to continue with this project.
President Joe Biden promised as a candidate that “not one more foot” of border wall would be built during his tenure.
