Hurricane Beryl Advances through the Caribbean and Becomes Dangerous

Hurricane Beryl advances in its passage through the Caribbean, and this Sunday, June 30, is expected to impact Grenada; authorities declare a state of emergency.

The Government of Grenada reports that it will declare a state of emergency as of 7 p.m. this Sunday (local time), in anticipation of the arrival of Hurricane Beryl, which is expected to hit the island in the next 24 hours.

“This is not a drill,” Grenada’s Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell said during a press conference Sunday.

The declaration will last for seven days, unless revoked sooner if storm damage is minimal.

Mitchell also said everyone should stay indoors after 7 p.m., except for non-essential services.

He also said people living in areas prone to storm surge and flooding should evacuate this afternoon and move to higher ground or shelters, warning that those areas could see high water levels.

He urged the public to stock up on water and emergency supplies, as the water outage is scheduled for tonight at 9 p.m.

Hurricane Beryl is first of the season

Hurricane Beryl is the first of the 2024 Atlantic season, and continued to strengthen on Sunday to become an “extremely dangerous” Category 4 storm, with winds of more than 200 km/h (124 mph).

This was reported by the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC), which warned of potentially deadly winds on islands in the West Indies.

The NHC warned that Hurricane Beryl, which is currently moving in the Atlantic Ocean about 565 kilometers (351 miles) east of Barbados, is creating a “very dangerous situation” and asked residents of the region to heed instructions from their governments and emergency management.

“The storm is now an extremely dangerous Category 4 hurricane,” the Miami-based center said, noting that the eye of the storm is expected to reach the Windward Islands, an archipelago that includes Martinique, St. Lucia and Grenada, among others, early Monday.

Hurricane Beryl will produce “potentially catastrophic hurricane force winds, potentially deadly storm surge and damaging waves,” the NHC forecast.

Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada and Tobago are under a hurricane warning, while a tropical storm warning is in effect for Martinique and Dominica.
