Hackers steal call logs and text messages from AT&T

Hackers steal six months’ worth of call logs and text messages from AT&T; so far the usefulness of the database is unknown to the responsible parties.

In this regard, the company reported that hackers stole six months of call and text message records.

The data involves nearly every customer on AT&T’s cellular network, the company disclosed Friday.

AT&T said it learned through an internal investigation that in April hackers “illegally accessed and copied call records that were stored in a third-party cloud platform.

Hackers stole call and text message records from AT&T between approximately May 1 and Oct. 31, 2022, and Jan. 2, 2023.

The content of the calls and messages was not compromised and customers’ personal information was not accessed, but the records did include phone numbers.

This was reported by the company in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

“While the data does not include customer names, there are often ways, using publicly available online tools, to find the name associated with a specific phone number,” the company said in its SEC filing.

The sheer size of the attack underscores the magnitude of the cybersecurity challenge facing large companies.

Hackers steal call logs and text messages from AT&T records for six months, and it’s a huge job, as AT&T’s wireless network has 127 million connected devices, according to the company’s 2023 annual report.

AT&T said it has “taken additional cybersecurity measures in response to this incident, including shutting down the illegal access point.” Customers affected by this hack will be contacted, it said.

The company added that the U.S. Department of Justice ruled twice that it must publicly announce details of the hack, on May 9 and June 5, in accordance with SEC rules.

AT&T added that it is assisting law enforcement officials in their efforts to arrest the hackers.
