Democratic U.S. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee passed away after suffering from cancer from which she was unable to overcome.

Democratic U.S. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee was a prominent anti-racist activist and defender of minority rights.

U.S. Democratic Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee died at the age of 74, her family announced on Friday, July 19.

She announced last month that she had pancreatic cancer and was undergoing treatment.

“Today, with incredible sorrow for our loss, but, at the same time, with deep gratitude for the life she shared with us, we announce the death of Representative Sheila Jackson Lee,” her family wrote on the X network (Twitter). Her relatives described her as “a fierce champion of the people” and a “humanitarian” person.

They also highlighted her supportive profile, defining her as a “caring woman, known as a ‘congresswoman’ by her constituents, in recognition of her omnipresence and service to them for over 30 years.”

The Congressional Black Caucus, meanwhile, referred to Democratic U.S. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee as a “titan” and “fierce advocate for social justice and economics, national security, energy independence, children and working families.”

She recently sought the mayoralty of Houston in last November’s election.

Jackson Lee is survived by her husband Elwyn Lee and two children.

Among her many accomplishments, Democratic U.S. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee introduced a bill to make the day commemorating the end of slavery a federal holiday.

She also championed police reforms when the death of George Floyd sparked uproar and protests across the country.

Reactions from local politicians were swift.

Former Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said he was “deeply saddened by the death of my dear friend and colleague.

As a token of his cross-cutting appreciation, Texas Governor Greg Abbott, a Republican, wrote on X (Twitter) that he will always remember Sheila Jackson Lee, adding that “her legacy of public service and dedication to Texas will live on.”
