Things aren’t going well; perhaps this is Checo Pérez’s worst moment with Red Bull this season, and he’s become the subject of criticism.
In a team where Checo Pérez has limited room to maneuver, with a car tailored to Max and the championship already decided, Red Bull seems more like a cage than a team.
After a strong start to the 2023 Formula 1 season with two victories in the first four races, the Mexican’s performance has declined.
Changes in the car, attempts to improve, distrust in the Mexican driver, technical issues, and various other factors have affected his performance.
Checo Pérez wants to spend four more years in Formula 1, and it’s a credible and achievable goal. Of course, maybe not with Red Bull, but other teams could have the Mexican driver in their seats.
In fact, with one year at Red Bull, he would only have two more to go. Any team in development would want a driver with such experience.
Checo Pérez wants another four years in Formula 1, even though he has only scored five points in the last three races, and his runner-up position is at risk.
Being second is the primary goal of the season, but it started to be in jeopardy with Lewis Hamilton lurking from third place, just 30 points behind the driver from Jalisco.
Additionally, Helmut Marko, the team’s advisor, has not been offering pleasant comments, which is his usual practice.
“Pérez needs a change of atmosphere and team. Now we will see how the next two races go. But the team and he are aware that he is in a crisis.”

Formally, Pérez has a contract with Red Bull until the end of the 2024 season, and his position as Max Verstappen’s teammate was confirmed by Marko and Christian Horner, the team principal.
However, Marko has never hesitated to drop a driver when necessary. Pierre Gasly, Alex Albon, and Nyck de Vries can attest to how quickly a driver can be replaced in the Austrian team.
Furthermore, an unfounded rumor emerged, suggesting Pérez might retire from Formula 1 at the end of the current season. Checo himself dismissed the rumor and clarified his future in the category.
“I have a contract for next year. It will be essential to have a good season to consider a renewal for 2025,” said the former Force India, Sauber, McLaren, and Racing Point driver.
Pérez’s determination to dispel any doubts about his future was evident in his final statement. “I would like to be in Formula 1 for at least three or four more years.”
With baseless rumors put to rest, he now needs to steer his course, return to his best form, and secure his path at Red Bull.
