A sensitive case: The euthanasia of a young Colombian man

The euthanasia of a young Colombian man has caught the attention of the world, and aroused public opinion of a very controversial case.

The euthanasia of a young Colombian man, 36-year-old Javier Acosta, made headlines throughout much of the Western Hemisphere.

Acosta requested euthanasia after a serious illness left him in a wheelchair a few years ago and recently worsened with no guarantee of recovery.

The euthanasia of a young Colombian has been a very controversial issue, but it leaves a sensitive perception about the right to live, but also the right to decide what to do with life. Nothing simple.

This young man from Bogota was left nine years ago in a wheelchair after a traffic accident, and contracted a bacterium supposedly in a swimming pool that caused a serious infection that reached his bones, a disease that they could not control and ended up developing a blood cancer, according to what he told Noticias Caracol.

The euthanasia of a young Colombian must be seen from the most compassionate point of view; this young man suffered from osteomyelitis, an infection that is located in the bones, passing through the bloodstream and spreading to the nearby tissue.

This disease tends to worsen in most cases, even with treatment.

After five years fighting against the disease, the treatments had no effect and the disease began to develop in his head, so, in view of the fact that he cannot walk either, the young man decided that he would rather undergo euthanasia than live in a hospital waiting for the cancer to end his life.

For this reason, the young man, father of a 12 year old minor, made the decision this past Monday to opt for euthanasia, which in Colombia is legal in cases of terminal, serious or incurable illness, and which was carried out this Friday.

One of the requests for euthanasia of a young Colombian is that he argued that he made the decision because he knew what awaited him with this disease.

In addition, he said that he would not like to harm his family or obstruct their way to lead a “normal life”.

He also shared in networks that, contrary to what many may think, he did think about his daughter before asking for euthanasia, since she was one of his main motivations.

The euthanasia of the young Colombian leaves a question that echoes in our minds: What would you have done in his case?.
