President López Obrador Accuses Supreme Court President Norma Piña of Hiring Associate of Genaro García Luna
López Obrador’s Remarks on Rising Crime in Guerrero
In a morning press conference on Friday, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador made startling allegations against Norma Piña, the President of the Supreme Court, claiming that she had hired one of the key associates of former Secretary of Public Security, Genaro García Luna, within the Judicial branch.
Progress in Spite of Challenges
When asked about the surge in intentional homicides in Guerrero this year and recent high-impact violent incidents,
López Obrador stated that progress was being made.
He noted that the state currently ranks ninth in terms of crime incidence in the country during his administration.
He highlighted a significant reduction in crime rates from 2018 to 2019, during his first year in office. López Obrador also pointed out that previous governors had been “in cahoots with criminal elements.”
Overcoming the Legacy
“Advancing Despite the Inheritance”
López Obrador reiterated that the government of Felipe Calderón had presided over a narco-state. He reminded everyone that Genaro García Luna, who served as Secretary of Public Security during Calderón’s administration, is currently incarcerated.
In this context, he mentioned that his administration was making progress “despite the legacy of groups that were tolerated since Calderón’s time” and even during Enrique Peña Nieto’s presidency. He attributed this progress to welfare programs, though he acknowledged the challenges of purifying public life after corrupt governments.
Accusation Against Norma Piña
Furthermore, López Obrador accused Minister Norma Piña of hiring “one of García Luna’s closest associates” within the Judicial branch.
The president stated that an investigation would be carried out to determine whether this individual had any involvement in criminal activities or ongoing investigations.
