Campaign launched to restrict social networks to under-16s in the UK
Campaign launched to restrict social networks to under-16s in the UK, following a case that draws public attention.
A campaign to restrict social networking to under 16s in the UK has been launched by a mother following the death of her daughter.
The mother who has initiated the campaign is named Esther Ghey whose daughter was killed by 28 stab wounds, and in such a sense she has initiated a campaign to achieve such a request.
Trans teenager Brianna Ghey was apparently contacted by her attacker through social networks.
According to the teenager’s mother, the killers had access to harmful content online, and managed with an application to enter the dark web.
The teenager had certain mental problems, and was accessing pro-anorexia and pro-self-harming pages, therefore, the victim’s mother asks that the use of the dark web be restricted to minors under 16 years of age.

The mother is calling for the restriction of social networks to children under 16 as she believes the web and networks are restrictions is a dangerous weapon.
“This is a story that reminds us how dangerous unrestricted technology is for our children,” said Ghey.
Ghey is sensible and explains that she is not referring to physical damage, but also to psychological damage.
In this regard, she calls on the telephone companies to take responsibility and proposes a minimum age limit and the introduction of strict controls.
So far, Ghey’s crusade to restrict social networks to children under the age of 16 has been very successful in Great Britain.
In addition, he hopes to meet with the parents of the murderers, who have been identified by the courts as Scarlett Jenkinson and Eddie Ratcliffe, aged 15 and 16.
These teenagers were sentenced to 22 and 20 years in prison.
According to the verdict of the judge who handled the case, Amanda Yip, Jenkinson was obsessed with Brianna, who had thousands of followers on Tik Tok.
During the investigations, the murderer assumed that she kept some organs, and highlighted that she kept her “beautiful eyes”.
In fact, Scarlett would be the mastermind of the premeditated crime, being driven by a deep desire to kill, which was motivated by videos on the dark web. The teenager had been watching similar content since the age of 12.
But, in addition, the authorities would have made it clear that there was some hostility because of Brianna’s trans status.
About the life of the young Brianna, whose mother is trying to get the restriction of social networks to children under 16, was a child who in 2006 decided to change gender in full pre-adolescence.
But, in addition, Brianna was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and autism.
In fact, a year before her death, she had been treated for excessive weight loss due to anorexia.
For Ghey, many adolescents can die and have mental problems if they do not act in time.
In addition, she estimates that many who are exposed to pornography will have trouble having stable relationships.
“Forty-nine percent of children between the ages of 8 and 11 have a smartphone, and this premature exposure causes them to fall into dangerous territories that will affect their mood and increase the risk of anxiety and depression,” said Brianna’s mother.
In order to restrict social networks to children under 16 years of age, the activist asks for a revision of the Online Safety Law, approved only in October 2023.
