60,000 with bivalent Covid vaccine in Ecuador

The bivalent Covid vaccine in Ecuador is being administered more widely, a month after the first doses arrived.

One month after the start of immunization with the bivalent Covid vaccine in Ecuador, around 60,000 people have already accessed this new medication.

Last July, 262,080 doses of the bivalent vaccine from Pfizer-BioNTech arrived in the country. They were then distributed to the nine zonal coordinations of the The bivalent Covid vaccine (MSP) nationwide.

Health Minister José Ruales stated that the coronavirus vaccine is now included in the regular vaccination schedule, and is therefore being offered regularly.

He added that during this semester, both healthcare personnel in hospitals and health centers (considered a priority population) and people over 65 years old or those with underlying health conditions that could make them more susceptible to illness will be vaccinated with the bivalent vaccine.

Regarding infections, he noted that COVID-19 is under control in Ecuador, with around 100 weekly cases over the last four months.

Moreover, no deaths from the virus have been reported in the last three weeks.

In the past four weeks, he mentioned, no new variants have been identified in the country.

What is known about the bivalent vaccine

The bivalent vaccine is a booster against COVID-19, named as such because it contains two protective components that allow for a better immune response of the body to an infection:

  • The first protects you from the original virus.
  • The second one, from the Omicron and EG.5 (Eris) variant lineages that are prevalent worldwide.

Therefore, it is important to visit the nearest health facilities to get vaccinated and thus avoid complications such as hospitalization, some sequelae left by the disease, and/or mortality.”
