On the occasion of the International Day of Happiness, which is celebrated on March 20, the personal finance website WalletHub has published its report on the Happiest Cities in the United States in 2024.
The study offers expert commentary, with the goal of discovering which locations offer the best conditions for the mental and physical well-being of Americans.
To determine the happiest cities in the United States in 2024, WalletHub compared more than 180 of the country’s largest cities using 29 key happiness indicators.
These indicators range from the rate of depression to the rate of income growth to the average time spent on leisure activities per day.

The 20 happiest cities in the United States are led by Fremont, California, followed closely by Overland Park, Kansas, and San Jose, California.
Other happiest U.S. cities in 2024 include Madison, Wisconsin; Irvine, California; and Honolulu, Hawaii.
Given the wide geographic diversity, it infers that the happiest cities in the United States do not have a specific region.
The least depressed city in the United States
Other key data from the report reveal interesting contrasts: Pearl City, Hawaii, has the lowest rate of depression, being significantly lower than in Lewiston, Maine, the city with the highest rate.
On the other hand, Newark, New Jersey, records the lowest number of suicides per 100,000 residents, notably fewer than Casper, Wyoming, which has the highest rate.
In addition, Fremont stands out for having the lowest rate of separation and divorce, as well as the highest proportion of households with incomes above $75,000 per year, factors that, according to studies, contribute significantly to people’s well-being and life satisfaction.
WalletHub’s analysis also included expert commentary on the nature of well-being.
Cassandra Happe, noted that money can buy happiness to some extent, as a stable income is essential to a person’s physical and mental well-being.
However, many other factors affect happiness, and the happiest cities combine economic security with friendly communities and conditions conducive to low rates of depression and high life satisfaction.
