Kamala Harris’ position on fracking: ¿Ambiguity?

Kamala Harris’ position on fracking was defended in an interview for CNN, published Thursday, August 29, 2024.

U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris on Thursday provided her most comprehensive explanation to date on why she changed some of her positions on fracking and immigration.

She told CNN’s Dana Bash that her values have not changed, but that her time as vice president gave her a new perspective on some of the country’s most pressing issues.

Another not minor tidbit in the interview, she noted that, if elected, she would appoint a Republican to her cabinet.

Kamala Harris’ position on fracking leaves some uncertainties about this plan in the United States.

When she became Joe Biden’s running mate, she had already moved away from that position and even cast the deciding vote to expand fracking leases.

At a campaign event in Pennsylvania this month, Trump actually said Harris was “against fracking, against oil drilling,” and would ban it.

But Harris’ campaign team has been unclear about her current stance and noted that the Biden administration supports clean energy and job growth in that sector.

And while the current administration has worked to make hydraulic extraction on public lands more expensive, it has not banned it outright.

Kamala Harris’ position on fracking is not very clear, and shows some ambiguity.

“No, and I made it clear in the 2020 debate: I will not ban fracking. As vice president, I did not ban it. As president, I will not ban it,” Harris said in an interview aired Thursday night, leaving her in a contradictory position.

“He’s against fracking, he’s against oil drilling, he wants everybody to have an electric car and share it with neighbors,” Trump told attendees at a rally in Harrisburg.
