Biden and AMLO Meeting: Migration and Fentanyl
The Biden and AMLO meeting continues to have migration and fentanyl on the agenda between the two nations.
As if these were issues that are never forgotten, once again, President Joe Biden and Andrés Manuel López Obrador focused on migration and fentanyl as the main topics.
However, it was noteworthy that the Biden and AMLO meeting managed to portray the U.S. president with a kind critique towards the Mexican president: he is very charming.
United States President Joe Biden expressed concern about the “charm” of his Mexican counterpart, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
During their meeting on November 17, he shared his worry after a dinner in the framework of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum.
Both leaders held a bilateral meeting at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, California. Before returning to Mexico, López Obrador discussed three main topics with Biden: economic cooperation, the fight against fentanyl, and migration.
Undoubtedly, the Biden and AMLO meeting also focused on the economies of both nations, cooperation agreements, and new alternatives for the region. But at a moment in that dialogue, Biden jokingly expressed his concern to the Mexican President.
“We had dinner last night. I told you, you sat next to my wife, you were so captivating that I was worried she might like you more than me,” Biden said. The U.S. president emphasized cooperation in security “side by side” against crime and particularly against fentanyl.
Migration and Fentanyl: Biden and AMLO Meeting
Biden stressed this issue because he believes it is an unavoidable matter, much like he discussed it with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, in San Francisco.
López Obrador stated that his government is committed “to prevent drug trafficking, especially the entry of fentanyl and other chemicals.”
In the context of cooperation to combat illicit drugs, Biden assured López Obrador, “I cannot have a better ally than you. Thank you.”
“Our relationship is excellent, built on friendship, respect, and cooperation. We are your main trading partner, making progress in resolving the migration issue, and we are willing to collaborate in the fight against drugs,” AMLO wrote on social media.
The Biden and AMLO meeting also addressed the migration issue as the main topic on the bilateral agenda.
During this week, the White House announced that Biden’s conversation with López Obrador would focus on cooperation mechanisms as partners “to manage migration at our shared border and mobilize a hemispheric response to this challenge.”
Similarly, the Biden and AMLO meeting addressed the issue of sanctions which, according to the Mexican president, is the root cause of this migration crisis.
Therefore, López Obrador has labeled the blockade on Cuba as a “flagrant violation of human rights.”.
